A powerful nor’easter is impacting the Tri-State area, bringing major concerns regarding severe coastal flooding, strong winds, and heavy rain to New York, New Jersey, Long Island, and Connecticut.

Coastal flooding has become a top concern, with Coastal Flood Warnings issued across the region. The greatest risk for flooding coincides with high tides throughout the weekend, with moderate flooding of up to two feet expected in many locations, and potentially reaching up to three feet in parts of Long Island such as Freeport and Lindenhurst. Some areas along the Jersey Shore and the Connecticut coast are seeing water levels rise to heights not experienced since Hurricane Sandy.

In addition to the flooding, the storm is bringing peak wind gusts of 40 to 55 mph, with some areas along the Jersey Shore experiencing High Wind Warnings where gusts could exceed 60 mph. High surf advisories and high rip current risks are also in effect for beaches across the region, leading to significant beach erosion and rough surf. Total rainfall is expected to range between 3 to 5 inches in areas south and east of New York City. Local officials have declared states of emergency in parts of New York and New Jersey as communities prepare for this long-duration severe weather event.
