Nearly three months after the Aspen Acres Fire ignited in Southern Colorado, legal battles over who is responsible continue to escalate. The massive wildfire has burned over 102,000 acres across Custer and Pueblo counties, destroying hundreds of structures including primary homes, and remains around 82% contained.
A fourth lawsuit has recently been filed against the San Isabel Electric Association on behalf of multiple affected residents. The legal complaint accuses the utility of negligence and trespassing, alleging that the fire started under San Isabel power lines, citing investigator data pointing to two ignition sites on either side of Highway 165.
While San Isabel Electric Association has declined to comment on the specific complaint, a spokesperson confirmed they are aware of it and determining appropriate next steps while keeping their focus on community support and recovery. The plaintiffs are seeking monetary damages and a trial by jury as part of their pursuit of accountability and rebuilding. This follows the recent denial by FEMA of additional disaster recovery aid to the state.
