Police are actively investigating whether the suspect in a fatal home invasion in Edgewood, Pennsylvania, had a prior relationship with the victim, a UPMC doctor.
Dr. Idris Evans, a 46-year-old pediatric critical care physician and medical director at UPMC Children’s Hospital, was fatally stabbed inside his home on Linden Avenue early Thursday morning. His wife, Gina Evans, was also seriously injured in the attack while they slept, though she and their two children managed to escape or call for help.
According to court paperwork, the suspect, identified as 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway, entered through an open window. During the attack, the victim’s wife recalled her husband calling the intruder by the name “Elijah,” as if he recognized him. Investigators are looking into whether the two men knew each other prior to the incident, though authorities have stated they are still working to confirm any connection and determine a motive.
