Newly uncovered archival documents have reopened a 95-year-old historical mystery surrounding the death of Angela “Geli” Raubal, Adolf Hitler’s 23-year-old half-niece, who was found dead from a gunshot wound to the chest in Hitler’s Munich apartment in September 1931.

For nearly a century, the officially accepted timelinebacked by Hitler’s own alibiclaimed that her body was discovered in a locked room on the morning of September 19, 1931, by Hitler’s personal servant. Because official records placed Hitler traveling to Nuremberg on the afternoon of September 18, the established narrative made it seem impossible for him to have been involved in her death, which was officially ruled a suicide.

However, German historian Harald Sandner recently discovered an entry in Munich’s official death register as well as two death notices that record the discovery of Raubal’s body at 10:15 am on September 18, 1931a full 24 hours earlier than previously believed. If authentic, these records place Hitler still in Munich at the time of her death, contradicting his long-standing alibi and fueling historical speculation about whether Nazi sympathizers in the police fabricated records to protect him.

While historians emphasize that these new documents do not prove Hitler murdered Raubal or definitively establish how she died, they have reignited scrutiny over the nature of their relationship. At the time of her death, rumors and press reports alleged that Hitler maintained an obsessively controlling and possessive attitude toward her, and the two had reportedly argued violently over her plans to move to Vienna to pursue musical studies. Other historians remain skeptical of the new interpretation, arguing that the date discrepancy may simply be a clerical registration error.
