Hurricane Nolo strengthened into a Category 2 storm as it approached Hawaii, prompting forecasters to warn of potential “catastrophic and life-threatening” flooding and mudslides. A hurricane watch and tropical storm warning were put into effect for Hawaii County, with forecasts indicating the storm could dump up to 3 feet of rain on parts of Hawaii’s Big Island.

Although the center of the storm was projected to stay south of the main Hawaiian Islands, outer bands brought hurricane-force winds extending outward up to 45 miles and tropical storm-force winds up to 140 miles. In response to the threat, an emergency declaration was approved to provide federal resources and assistance for state recovery. State parks on the Big Island and Maui were closed, and officials urged residents in vulnerable areas to prepare for severe impacts.
