According to the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, a 26-year-old man named Josiah Smith was arrested after allegedly forcing his way into a home near Gainesville with a sword and forcing the occupants outside.
When deputies arrived at the scene on NW 91st Street during the early morning hours, they located Smith still holding the sword and repeatedly commanded him to drop it or get on the ground. After he refused to comply, deputies initially fired a less-lethal foam round at him. When that failed to make him drop the weapon, deputies deployed a Taser and successfully detained him.
Investigators stated that the suspect and the victim did not know each other prior to the incident. Smith was subsequently arrested and faces charges including armed burglary of an occupied dwelling, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, armed kidnapping, and resisting without violence.
