Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has discussed a new diplomatic proposal concerning the strategic Strait of Hormuz. According to the plan, which was outlined by Iranian officials including Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, Iran has offered a seven-day roadmap to de-escalate regional conflict and reopen the crucial waterway.
Under the proposal, if specific conditions are met by the United Statessuch as halting hostilities including in Lebanon, lifting the naval blockade on Iranian ports, waiving sanctions on Iranian oil, and releasing frozen assetsIran would fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz by the seventh day. This would be followed immediately by the restart of comprehensive negotiations regarding Tehran’s nuclear program, with Pezeshkian also indicating that Iran would allow UN nuclear inspectors back into the country.
While addressing an atmosphere of deep-seated distrust and past failed agreements, Pezeshkian emphasized that Iran is ready to commit to its obligations if the U.S. and its partners follow through on the framework.
