Sylvester Stallone opened up about a harrowing childhood marked by physical abuse, abandonment, and a lack of affection in a new interview promoting his memoir, “The Steps.” The action star shared that he deliberately left some of the darkest stories out of his book to avoid a “pity party,” noting that his upbringing was “insane.”

Following his parents’ divorce, Stallone lived with his father in Maryland, whom he described as volatile and physically abusive with very big hands, recalling that he learned to duck quickly to avoid blows. Among his memories, he recounted an incident where his father kicked and punched him in the stomach, leaving him lying in the street after he brought home the wrong kind of bread from a store. Years later, in his 40s, Stallone confronted his father and told him he wished they were the same age for three minutes so he could give him “some of his own medicine,” prompting his fatherthen 68to challenge him to a fight. Stallone credited this genetic ferocity as the inspiration behind his famous character, Rambo.

Stallone also spoke about emotional deprivation during his youth, revealing that his mother never hugged him, and his father rarely showed affection either. He also shared that he was sent to live in a boarding house at a very young age where his parents visited only once a month, leaving him to be raised by strangers. While acknowledging that these hardships made him tough in the wrong way, Stallone shared that he did not experience true love until he was around 70 years old, when he found it with his wife, Jennifer Flavin, and his children.
