Jeremiah Smith is the standout wide receiver for Ohio State, widely viewed as one of the top players in college football and a leading Heisman Trophy contender in his junior season. He arrived as the nation’s highest-ranked recruit, immediately produced at an elite level, helped win a national championship as a freshman, and last week became the Buckeyes’ all-time leader in receiving yards in just 33 career games. He is now chasing the school records for career receptions and touchdown catches as well.Today Ohio State opened Big Ten play against Illinois. Smith scored twice in the first quarter. The first was a short touchdown catch. The second was a 72-yard score in which he hauled in a deep pass and then evaded a defender with sharp cuts to reach the end zone. Those plays, especially the long touchdown, generated a surge of highlight clips and praise across social media as fans and analysts called him one of the most physically gifted receivers in the country. The conversation centers on his combination of size, speed, body control, and consistency at a young age, along with how quickly he is rewriting Ohio State’s record book.
