During the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu used his address to launch a sharp and direct attack on New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. The fiery exchange followed months of severe political tension between the two leaders, which began when Mamdani fiercely criticized Israel’s military actions in Gaza and previously called Netanyahu a war criminal.

During his speech, Netanyahu labeled Mamdani an antisemite, accused him of trying to silence and block him from visiting the city, and claimed that Jewish residents no longer feel safe in New York under his administration. Netanyahu also targeted Mamdani’s personal associations and background.

Mamdani responded by rejecting the allegations, accusing Netanyahu of using the global platform to spread baseless falsehoods intended to distract from and sanitize the humanitarian crisis and military campaign in Gaza. The speech itself drew intense reactions, prompting a mass walkout by dozens of international diplomats and sparking massive protests outside the UN headquarters that resulted in numerous arrests.
