A 36-year-old mother in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, named Sarah Brubaker, has been charged with third-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, child endangerment, and recklessly endangering another person following the death of her 4-year-old daughter.
According to police and court documents, emergency responders found the young girl unresponsive and cold to the touch on December 20. An autopsy determined that the child died from pseudomembranous colitis, a severe bacterial infection of the colon, and the medical examiner officially ruled the death a homicide caused by neglect.
Investigators stated that Brubaker admitted her daughter had not eaten for at least two weeks prior to her death and had been suffering from severe diarrhea, weakness, and balance issues. When authorities searched the family’s home, they discovered severe neglect conditions: the heating system had been intentionally shut offdespite the house being connected to a free natural gas welland it was so cold that ice was forming on the inside of the windows. Additionally, the refrigerators contained no food.
Police reports noted that the parents had quit their jobs and faced financial hardships, though they reportedly chose not to seek available public assistance or use an investment fund they could access. Brubaker is being held at the Clearfield County Jail with bail set at $1 million.
