A second Columbus police officer is under investigation for the alleged misuse of Flock camera technology.
According to a statement released by the Columbus Division of Police, a review of Flock technology use uncovered evidence of potential misuse by Officer Stephen O’Brien, a 32-year veteran of the department. As a result, O’Brien has been relieved of duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
This follows an earlier investigation involving another Columbus police officer, Melvin Tellis, a 10-year veteran who was also relieved of duty after allegedly searching for the same license plates hundreds of times. Following those events, the city previously paused its use of Flock license plate readers.
Amid these developments and other related incidents across Ohio, Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson is pushing for the Ohio General Assembly to criminalize the misuse of Flock camera technology, proposing that such offenses be classified as a felony.
