Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul met on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, marking the first high-level talks between the two countries’ top diplomats since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The roughly 20-minute closed-door meeting was reportedly requested by the German side and came amid sharply rising tensions between Berlin and Moscow. During the discussion, Foreign Minister Wadephul urged Moscow to abandon its “dangerous path of escalation” against Germany, Europe, and NATO. He also condemned recent hybrid assaults and an alleged Russian drone attack targeting Leipzig airport, while reaffirming Germany’s firm and unwavering support for Ukraine.

Additionally, the German side pressed for a pragmatic approach to critical issues, such as securing agreements on Black Sea grain exports to alleviate food shortages globally, particularly in the Global South. Following the encounter, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov minimized the outcome of the brief meeting, stating that “nothing new came from” the conversation.
