The couple woke up and fought back against the intruder. During the assault, the victim’s wife yelled for their children, ages 8 and 12, to flee to a neighbor’s house, which they did safely. The wife also managed to escape to a neighbor’s home. Responding police officers found Dr. Evans with severe injuries on the bedroom floor; he was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

According to the criminal complaint, the suspect wore only underwear, demanded car keys, and made repeated statements about “being God”. Though Dr. Evans addressed the intruder by the name “Elijah,” his wife stated she did not recognize the attacker, and investigators are still working to determine whether the two men knew each other or what motivated the attack.
