As the H5 bird flu continues to spread across Victoria, authorities and conservation experts are considering emergency extractions of wild birds to protect vulnerable and threatened species. The outbreak, which has increasingly affected wild coastal bird populations and various seabirds, shorebirds, and waterbirds along Victoria’s coastline, has prompted heightened biosecurity measures and increased monitoring.
Government agencies, including Agriculture Victoria and the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA), are working on coordinated responses that include wildlife monitoring and the protection of threatened native species. Officials and wildlife organizations are urging the public to avoid all contact with sick or dead wildlife, keep pets away from affected areas, and report any sightings of sick or dead birds to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline.
