(Spain) What is the story behind this trend in Social Media today?

27-09-2026

Today in Spain, social media conversation has been dominated by two large demonstrations that took place in Madrid on the same Saturday. One march, organised by Sociedad Civil Española and supported by parties such as the PP and Vox, brought thousands of people onto the streets from Cibeles towards Moncloa. Participants expressed solidarity with Ceuta after the large migrant arrivals of recent months, criticised the government’s handling of the situation, called for the city to be militarised and for irregular arrivals to be returned, and demanded the immediate calling of general elections together with guarantees that the vote would be clean. Slogans against the prime minister and chants in defence of national unity were common. At the same time a separate demonstration, called by the Sindicato de Inquilinas, started at Puerta del Sol and headed towards Congress. It focused on the eviction earlier in the week of Maricarmen, an 87-year-old woman with a disability who had lived in the same Madrid flat for more than seventy years. After a fund bought the building and raised the rent sharply, courts eventually authorised her removal; she left the building on a stretcher and remains in hospital. Protesters demanded an urgent housing decreealready nicknamed the “decreto Maricarmen”that would automatically renew vulnerable tenants’ contracts, impose a moratorium on evictions without alternative housing, and tighten rules on seasonal and tourist rentals. The case has become a symbol of Spain’s broader housing shortage and the difficulty many people, especially older or low-income tenants, face in keeping their homes. These two protests, together with the usual Saturday mix of sport (the Azerbaijan Grand Prix) and entertainment, account for most of the day’s visible social-media activity in Spain.
