(John Mateer) What is the story behind this trend in Social Media today?

John Mateer is the starting quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners. After a strong transfer season in 2025 that included a College Football Playoff appearance, expectations were high entering 2026. Those hopes have cooled after uneven early-season play.Against New Mexico on September 19, Oklahoma won an unimpressive 14-6 home game. Mateer threw two first-half interceptions and was booed by the home crowd. Later he completed a 53-yard touchdown to a wide-open receiver. After the game he explained that he initially missed the receiver while working through his reads. He only spotted him after hearing the stadium crowd scream, which told him something was happening downfield. That combination of turnovers, home-crowd frustration, and the unusual admission that fans had to alert him to an open teammate became the focal point of discussion. It crystallized growing concern that the offense, and Mateer specifically, has not lived up to preseason hype heading into a difficult stretch of the schedule.
