(Mateer) What is the story behind this trend in Social Media today?

John Mateer is the starting quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners college football team. He transferred in after a strong season elsewhere and arrived with high expectations, including some early Heisman Trophy conversation last year. His time in Norman has been uneven, marked by turnovers, inconsistent passing, and growing frustration from fans who have even booed him in recent games. The current spike in attention comes from today’s matchup against Georgia. Mateer had a rough first half filled with costly mistakes, including turnovers that led directly to scores for the other team. One notable play was an unforced fumble that was returned a long distance for a touchdown. Combined with earlier struggles this season, the performance prompted many Oklahoma supporters to publicly demand that he be replaced for the rest of the game. The coaching staff kept him in, but the Sooners fell behind by a wide margin. This latest outing sits on top of an existing storyline that includes last year’s betting-related questions (which he denied, calling old payment descriptions inside jokes among friends) and a general sense that his play has not matched the hype that followed him to Oklahoma. The combination of on-field results and fan reaction is what pushed his name into widespread discussion across social media today.
