Chinese President Xi Jinping announced that two giant pandas, a male named Ping Ping and a female named Fu Shuang, are headed to Zoo Atlanta as part of China’s longstanding “panda diplomacy.” The announcement was made during a high-stakes summit in Washington, D.C., serving as a gesture of goodwill and friendship between the United States and China.

Both pandas were born at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in China. In preparation for their journey, the pair underwent a month of quarantine with live-in carers and were trained to adjust to crates and loud noises for their long flight. Their arrival comes under a 10-year conservation agreement between Zoo Atlanta and the China Wildlife Conservation Association, following the return of previous pandas to China in 2024.
