A video shared by Israel’s UN Ambassador, Danny Danon, showing him confronting an Iranian diplomat at the United Nations General Assembly with a Starlink satellite internet terminal has reached millions of views online, with nearly 40% of its Instagram audience located inside Iran.
The viral moment followed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s UN speech, where he brandished a Starlink device to criticize Iran’s internet censorship and suggested it could help the Iranian people bypass state controls. Following the speech, Danon approached a seated member of the Iranian UN mission, Nasser Asadi, holding out the terminal and telling him to take it back to Tehran so it could be useful to the Iranian people. The Iranian diplomat ignored the gesture and turned away.
According to Danon’s office, the high engagementparticularly the significant viewership within Iranprompted a reaction from the Iranian regime. Representatives stated that Iranian-linked accounts began a counter-disinformation campaign by recirculating an unrelated, years-old video of a former Israeli UN ambassador being escorted out of the General Assembly to distract from and change the narrative surrounding the Starlink encounter.
