The news article reports that 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway, who was arrested and charged with the fatal stabbing of Dr. Idris Evans, a physician at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, is now facing separate sexual assault charges.
Here are the key details of the story:
The Sexual Assault Charges: During their investigation into the fatal stabbing, Allegheny County detectives were contacted by Wilkinsburg Police regarding an incident that occurred around 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 23, the day prior to the home invasion. A woman reported that while walking on a path connecting an alley to West Street, an unknown man sexually assaulted her. Investigators recovered evidence linking Hemingway to the crime scene, including the victim’s stolen cell phone. In consultation with the district attorney’s office, he was formally charged with rape, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, robbery, and sexual assault.
The Fatal Stabbing: Early Thursday morning, September 24, Hemingway broke into the Edgewood home of Dr. Idris Evans and his wife, Gina. The couple was attacked in their bed with a kitchen knife. Dr. Evans did not survive his injuries, while his wife was hospitalized in critical condition. The couple’s two children (ages 8 and 12) managed to escape safely to a neighbor’s house. Following the attack, police located Hemingway hiding behind a nearby home with cuts on his hands. He was charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary, and criminal trespass.
Prior Criminal Record: Hemingway was already free on a non-monetary bond following an arrest in July related to a burglary and theft at a former partner’s residence in Pittsburgh. Officials have also noted prior arrests and police encounters in Florida.
