This news reports on the arrest of 26-year-old Travionna C. Johnson in Spokane, Washington, who faces charges of manslaughter and abandonment of a dependent person after her 8-year-old daughter was found unresponsive in an overflowing bathtub.
First responders were called to the apartment after a downstairs neighbor reported water leaking through the ceiling. Firefighters had to enter through a window because the door was locked. Inside, they discovered the 8-year-old girl in the overflowing tub; she was rushed to the hospital and pronounced dead.
Court records indicate that the child was nonverbal, had epilepsy and developmental disabilities, had mobility issues, and functioned at the developmental level of a 3- or 4-year-old, requiring full-time assistance for feeding, dressing, and bathing. It was also noted that the child had a known fascination with running water.
Johnson told investigators that she left for work just before 7 a.m. while her daughter was still asleep. She claimed she sent a text message to her sister to watch the girl, but later admitted she knew the text had not gone through because her phone only worked on Wi-Fi and she had already walked outside coverage. The girl’s aunt told authorities that while she was scheduled to watch the child later that day around noon, she had not been informed to arrive early in the morning.
Johnson stated in court documents that leaving her daughter alone was unusual for her, expressing deep remorse. During her initial court hearing, Johnson’s family noted she had a history of severe mental health struggles, including past hospitalizations, and pleaded for mental health intervention, maintaining that she loved her daughter and was not in her right mind. The judge set Johnson’s bond at $500,000, with a trial scheduled for November.
