At least 27 people were killed and more than 26 others injured following two separate overnight mass shootings in South African townships near Johannesburg and Cape Town.
The AttacksWedela Township (Southwest of Johannesburg): On Saturday night around 9:30 p.m., eight suspects armed with AK-47 assault rifles and handguns stormed a local bar and opened fire on patrons. Emergency services declared 17 people dead at the scene (13 men and 4 women). At least 15 others were wounded and transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Lwandle Township (Near Cape Town): A few hours later, around 1:00 a.m. on Sunday, another shooting took place at a store in Lwandle. Multiple unidentified gunmen opened fire, killing 10 people and wounding 11 others.
Suspects and Motive: The South African Police Service (SAPS) launched manhunts for the gunmen involved in both incidents. The motives behind the attacks have not yet been established, and no arrests have been made.
Spike in Gun Violence: These two incidents occurred only days after a mass shooting at a house party near Durban killed 11 people, including a pregnant woman. While South Africa has long struggled with high homicide rates, this concentration of coordinated, high-casualty shootings within a single week has prompted severe concern and heightened police operations across the provinces.
