Emergency rescue operations in Athens’ historic Plaka district, near the foot of the Acropolis, concluded after recovery teams retrieved the bodies of six victims from the rubble of a collapsed residential building on Lysikratous Street. Authorities confirmed that four of the deceased were American tourists staying in a short-term rental unit, while the other two victims were an elderly British national and his Greek wife who resided on the upper floor.

The powerful blast, which occurred on Friday morning and scattered debris across several neighboring streets, also injured multiple individuals in adjacent properties. Athens Mayor Haris Doukas and utility investigators have pointed to a catastrophic failure in the local gas infrastructure as the primary cause. Safety and engineering crews remain deployed throughout the Plaka area to evaluate structural damage to neighboring historic buildings and determine whether further evacuations or emergency demolitions are required.
