In an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union,” the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, explained why President Donald Trump rejected a recent Iranian diplomatic proposal aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz and de-escalating tensions.
According to Waltz:
Lack of Good Faith: President Trump does not believe Iranian leaders are coming to the table in good faith or that they are genuinely willing to negotiate an end to their nuclear program.
Unacceptable Demands: Waltz stated that Iran was “asking for everything up front,” including immediate relief from United States sanctions and, crucially, the removal of long-standing United Nations snapback sanctions linked to its nuclear activity.
Past Violations: The administration cited broken commitments, pointing out that Tehran had previously breached memorandums and attacked commercial maritime shipping in the Strait of Hormuz despite prior understandings.
On the other side, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi maintained that a negotiated agreement is the only viable path out of the conflict and blamed Washington for turning down their proposal.
