Around 30 students and two faculty members were injured during a violent clash on Sunday at the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) in Kolkata.

What Triggered the Incident

The confrontation began after the SRFTI administration rented out the institute’s main auditorium on a Sunday to the Akhil Bharatiya Grahak Panchayat (ABGP), an RSS-affiliated consumer awareness body. A large section of students and the SRFTI Students’ Union questioned why the administration leased campus space to an outside organization for a non-film event.

The Escalation
  • Students’ version: Students approached the auditorium displaying posters to protest against the administration’s decision and the alleged political nature of the gathering. They reported being met with physical attacks, beatings with sticks, stone-pelting, and verbal abuse (being labeled “anti-national” and “urban Naxals”). Female students reported receiving threats and facing physical aggression. Uninvolved students who took shelter in the library were also pursued, and a campus guard along with faculty members trying to intervene were assaulted. An ambulance transporting injured students was briefly surrounded before police intervened.

  • ABGP’s version: Representatives stated they had rented the venue legitimately through official channels for an awareness program. They claimed that around 100 students gathered, shouted slogans against the RSS, stormed the venue, tore banners, and kicked posters depicting Bharat Mata and Swami Vivekananda, leading to a physical confrontation.

Aftermath and Action
  • Twenty-five injured students were taken to Desun Hospital, where two were admitted, while others and faculty members received treatment on-site or outpatient care.

  • Police deployed barricades and personnel to bring the situation under control as tensions lingered outside the campus gates late into the night.

  • Three First Information Reports (FIRs) were registered late Sundaytwo by the ABGP and one by SRFTI studentswith police initiating an investigation into the violence.
