This gesture took place amid significant political tension, public protests, and pressure from domestic activists urging a boycott of the fixtures due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The decision drew strong commentary from various sports outlets and media commentators, including sharp criticism from platforms like OutKick, which argued that sportsmanship should transcend political demonstrations and condemned the team’s refusal to participate in the pre-match handshake.
