President Trump is set to announce plans for the construction of the largest steel plant in U.S. history, to be built in Iowa.
Key details of the announcement include:
Project and Investment: The Minnesota-based company Mesabi Metallics is planning a $15 billion investment for the mega steel plant.
Timeline and Output: The facility is scheduled to be up and running by 2030 and is expected to produce 7.5 million or more tons of steel annually. The specific location within Iowa has not yet been announced.
Jobs: The project is projected to create 1,750 permanent jobs in the state.
Supply Chain: The raw iron ore for the facility will be supplied by a new $2.5 billion iron ore mine in Minnesota, also operated by Mesabi Metallics.
Administration Context: This initiative builds upon the administration’s broader trade agenda and efforts to boost domestic manufacturing, which included doubling tariffs on imported steel to 50% last year. The administration also notes that the steel produced could support future U.S. defense projects.
