Ferhat Gündoğdu is the president of Turkey’s Central Referee Committee, the body that oversees match officials in professional football. Today he and six other people connected to the referee system were detained in a coordinated operation across four provinces. The investigation concerns two main allegations: workplace bullying of referees and observers, and forgery of official documents. Prosecutors say the case grew out of a complaint filed last year. Investigators examined witness statements, financial records, phone data, and expert reviews of documents used in referee exams, classifications, scoring, and match appointments.Gündoğdu is a retired army colonel with a doctorate in sports management and a background as a former referee. He first led the committee in 2021–2022, when a large-scale shake-up of officials produced intense public debate and his resignation. He was appointed again in 2024. Referee decisions have remained a constant source of controversy in Turkish football, with clubs and fans regularly accusing the system of bias or favoritism. The detentions therefore landed on already raw nerves. For many supporters the news confirmed long-standing suspicions that appointments and evaluations were being manipulated. Others treated it as one more episode in the endless cycle of referee scandals. Either way, the arrest of the country’s top referee official instantly became the dominant football story of the day.
