Hurricane Polo approached Mexico’s Baja California Sur with sustained winds of 115 mph, whipping the northern Pacific coast and causing street flooding as high tides and pounding surf breached coastal barriers. The National Hurricane Center issued warnings for heavy rainfall between 6 to 12 inches, flash floods, mudslides, destructive waves, and dangerous storm surges. In response to the threat, Mexican authorities deployed thousands of troops, suspended schools and government work, closed beaches and ports, and opened temporary emergency shelters across the region to protect residents.
