Jonathan McKinsey, a 40-year-old engineering executive for The New York Times, was shot and killed in broad daylight at a sports complex parking lot in Dublin, California.

Police arrested his parents-in-law, 77-year-old Shouyong Zhang and 77-year-old Shili Chen, at the scene. Witnesses reported that the elderly couple wore masks and took turns shooting McKinsey before calmly waiting nearby until officers arrived and detained them.

The suspects were booked into Alameda County’s Santa Rita Jail and face multiple charges, including first-degree murder, felony conspiracy, and child endangerment. Court and police records indicated that McKinsey and his wife had been going through contentious divorce, child custody, and legal proceedings involving domestic protection orders prior to the incident. Authorities are continuing to investigate the exact motive behind the shooting.
