Six Flags announced it will permanently shutter its most famous and marquee roller coaster, X2, at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Southern California. This decision follows a CNN investigation published roughly a month prior that exposed a long history of life-altering injuries and deaths linked to the ride.

For nearly two decades, X2 drew roller coaster enthusiasts from around the world for its 4th-dimensional design, which features seats that rotate 360 degrees around the track as trains reach speeds of nearly 80 miles per hour. However, allegations regarding injuries on the ride date back more than a decade.

The investigation brought these issues to light by documenting more than a dozen reports of serious injuries and hospitalizationsincluding at least two deathsassociated with the ride. Scrutiny intensified after two women suffered severe brain injuries just six days apart in July, leading to the ride’s temporary closure. Following the initial media exposure, attorneys representing plaintiffs announced that more than 100 people had come forward claiming they suffered brain injuries from the roller coaster within the prior two years alone.

While Six Flags has previously defended the safety of its operations, the mounting pressure and revelations from the investigation ultimately resulted in the permanent closure of the attraction.
