Náfer Durán, a renowned Colombian vallenato accordionist and composer known as Naferito, died today at the age of 93 from cardiac complications. He was the brother of the legendary Alejo Durán and was crowned Rey Vallenato in 1976 after winning the accordion competition at the Festival de la Leyenda Vallenata. He also played accordion on Diomedes Díaz’s debut album and dedicated more than eight decades to preserving traditional vallenato rhythms such as the paseo, merengue, son and puya. His passing was announced by his son and quickly circulated across Colombian media and social networks, prompting tributes that highlighted his role as one of the last remaining juglares of the genre.
