New details have emerged in a civil lawsuit filed by a former Cornell University student who alleges she was drugged and gang-raped for multiple hours by members of the Chi Phi fraternity in October 2024.
The plaintiff, identified as Jane Doe, filed a civil lawsuit against seven former fraternity members and Cornell University, alleging they failed to protect her and prevent the assault. While Cornell conducted an internal Title IX review following her report to campus policewhich resulted in disciplinary actions including expulsions and suspensionsno criminal charges were initially brought against the accused at the time.
The Tompkins County District Attorney’s Office announced it is reopening the criminal investigation to present evidence to a grand jury. The decision follows community pressure and discrepancies noted between the woman’s initial sworn statement to campus police in November 2024which the DA stated described her participation in drug use and sexual conduct as voluntaryand the allegations detailed in her later civil complaint, which claims she was drugged against her will and gang-raped.
The lawsuit highlights a Snapchat group chat message sent from the fraternity house during the night of the incident suggesting a woman was available for sex, alongside text messages exchanged shortly afterward between the plaintiff and one of the defendants. Attorneys representing the accused fraternity members have strongly denied the allegations, maintaining that their clients are innocent and that the claims contradict earlier statements and university findings. Meanwhile, New York Governor Kathy Hochul called for an independent, transparent review of the university’s handling of the case.
