(Cam Schlittler) What is the story behind this trend in Social Media today?
30-09-2026
Cam Schlittler is a 25-year-old New York Yankees pitcher from Walpole, Massachusetts, a Boston suburb where he grew up as a devoted Red Sox, Bruins, and Patriots fan. His parents named him after Bruins Hall of Famer Cam Neely. Drafted in the seventh round in 2022 out of Northeastern University as an unheralded prospect with a mid-90s fastball, he rapidly added velocity and refined a unique mix of four-seam, two-seam, and cutter fastballs that now sit in the upper 90s and occasionally touch triple digits. He debuted in 2025 and immediately impressed. The social media conversation today centers on his latest postseason outing. In Game 1 of the American League Wild Card Series against the Boston Red Sox, Schlittler delivered another dominant start: scoreless innings, very few hits allowed, and double-digit strikeouts. The performance echoes his breakout 2025 Wild Card Game 3, when he threw eight shutout innings with 12 strikeouts and no walks against the same rival, becoming the first pitcher in postseason history to post that combination. That earlier start was fueled by online harassment directed at him and his family from some Boston fans, which he later described as crossing a line. He has since used perceived slights and rivalry trash talk as motivation, a trait the Yankees have even leaned into by showing him critical clips. This year he emerged as the team’s ace while other starters recovered from injuries, posting a league-leading 1.95 ERA, 239 strikeouts, and a franchise-record number of starts allowing one run or fewer. He made the All-Star team and entered the playoffs as a Cy Young favorite. The current buzz mixes celebration of the pitching masterpiece, Yankees-Red Sox rivalry energy, jokes about his unusual “just throw fastballs down the middle and nobody hits them” style, and renewed discussion of a Massachusetts kid now starring for the team Boston fans love to hate. After last year’s series-clinching gem and this year’s regular-season success against Boston, another strong playoff showing against his hometown club has fans on both sides talking.
