Cristiano Ronaldo left Portugal’s national team training camp on Wednesday amid a public disagreement with new head coach Jorge Jesus.Jesus, who previously managed Ronaldo at Al-Nassr, took charge of Portugal after the 2026 World Cup. Ronaldo started the opening Nations League match against Wales but was left unused on the bench throughout the 2-1 win over Norway on Sunday. Reports claimed the coach had indicated he would introduce Ronaldo for around 30 minutes; that did not happen. Ronaldo went straight down the tunnel at full time and did not join teammates or acknowledge supporters. He then missed group training sessions, doing individual gym work instead. On Tuesday he posted a photo of himself in a Portugal shirt with only the Portuguese flag and a heart emoji. On Wednesday the coach told reporters there was no rift, that Ronaldo had not refused to train, and that the player would take part in that day’s session. Shortly afterward Ronaldo departed the stadium in a federation vehicle. He later issued a statement saying that after the coach’s press conference and a conversation with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, he had decided to leave camp. He added that he would explain the reasons to the Portuguese public in due course and wished his teammates good luck. The episode, coming on the eve of Portugal’s match against Denmark, immediately became the dominant football story across social media. Many posts treat it as a possible end to Ronaldo’s international career; others debate whether the coach was asserting authority or mishandling a national icon. Ronaldo has not yet given his promised fuller account.
