01-10-2026
Captain Smit Machchhar, a Mumbai-born Indian pilot of Gujarati origin, became the centre of widespread attention after events on flydubai Flight FZ1073 on 30 September 2026. The Boeing 737 MAX was flying from Dubai to Tel Aviv with 174 people on board, including children, when a violent confrontation erupted in the cockpit. The co-pilot, an Omani national, allegedly stabbed Machchhar and tried to take control of the aircraft in an apparent attempt to crash it. The plane dropped roughly 14,000 feet in under 30 seconds and transmitted emergency codes. Despite being seriously wounded and bleeding, Machchhar managed to unlock the cockpit door. Cabin crew and passengers then rushed in and overpowered the attacker. Two off-duty flydubai pilots travelling as passengers helped take over the controls and diverted the aircraft to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. Everyone on board survived. Machchhar underwent surgery and was reported to be in stable condition.Machchhar never set out to become a pilot. He studied textile engineering with the intention of joining the family business, then switched to a management course. An aviation seminar he attended at the age of 19 changed his path. He trained in New Zealand, joined SpiceJet in 2011, rose to senior commander and line training captain, and moved to flydubai as a direct-entry captain in 2022. He has accumulated nearly 10,000 flying hours, mostly on Boeing 737 aircraft.World leaders praised his actions as heroic. Older interviews in which he spoke about remaining calm under pressure, the vital role of cabin crew in emergencies, and his mother’s initial fear of his career choice have resurfaced and circulated widely. The combination of the mid-air struggle, the safe outcome, his unconventional career journey, and the public tributes turned his name into a major topic of discussion across social media.
