Starting October 1, 2026, the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) officially transitioned to an all-electronic vehicle registration system.
Here are the key details of this change:
What Is ChangingNo More License Plate Stickers: When registering or renewing a vehicle, drivers will no longer receive physical validation stickers to place on their license plates. Drivers are permitted to remove expired or old registration stickers, or simply leave them as is.
No Automatic Paper Cards: The state will no longer automatically print and mail physical vehicle registration cards.
Digital Verification: Law enforcement officers across the state verify registration validity in real time by scanning or running license plate numbers against the digital database.
Annual Renewals: Vehicle owners must still renew their registration every year and pay the required vehicle property taxes and registration fees on time.
Inspections & Insurance: Drivers must still meet the required annual vehicle safety and emissions inspection standards and maintain active vehicle liability insurance to renew.
Penalties for Expiration: An expired registration is still subject to standard legal fines and penalties, as expiration dates remain tracked electronically in state and police records.
Drivers who still prefer or require a physical registration cardsuch as for out-of-state travel, commercial driving, or personal record-keepingcan print a confirmation copy online or request a physical card from the NCDMV for a small printing and processing fee.
