The news reports that Captain Smit Machchhar, the Indian flydubai pilot hailed as a hero for thwarting an in-flight catastrophe, has been airlifted from Saudi Arabia to Dubai for further medical care.

Here are the key details of the incident and his transfer:

• In-Flight Incident: Captain Machchhar was commanding flydubai Flight FZ1073 en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv when a violent mid-air altercation occurred in the cockpit. The co-pilot reportedly stabbed and severely injured him while attempting to force the aircraft into a steep dive.

• Critical Actions: Despite sustaining heavy stab wounds to his head and hands and suffering significant blood loss, Captain Machchhar fought back and managed to unlock the cockpit door. This allowed crew members, off-duty pilots, and passengers to breach the cockpit, overpower and restrain the attacker, and stabilize the aircraft.

• Emergency Landing & Initial Treatment: The Boeing 737 made a safe emergency landing at Tabuk Airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia, saving the lives of the 174 passengers and crew on board. Captain Machchhar received urgent emergency medical treatment and stabilization surgery at a local hospital in Tabuk.

• Transfer to Dubai: After his condition was stabilized, flydubai arranged for him to be airlifted via an air ambulance from Saudi Arabia directly to a specialized hospital in Dubai to continue his recovery and receive advanced treatment.
