In 1995, at age 18, Christa Pike was enrolled in the Job Corps program in Knoxville, Tennessee. Believing that 19-year-old classmate Colleen Slemmer was attempting to come between her and her boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp, Pike conspired with Shipp and another student, Shadolla Peterson, to lure Slemmer to an isolated wooded area near the University of Tennessee campus.

Over the course of roughly 30 minutes, Slemmer was beaten, cut, and tortured. Pike carved a pentagram into Slemmer’s chest, slashed her throat, and struck her head with a large piece of asphalt, ultimately keeping a fragment of Slemmer’s skull as a souvenir. In 1996, Pike was convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder, receiving the death sentence and making her the youngest woman sentenced to death row in modern United States history. Later, in 2001, she was also convicted of attempted first-degree murder for trying to strangle an inmate with a shoelace while in prison.
