FlyDubai Flight FZ1073 was en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv when a mid-air crisis unfolded in the cockpit. The aircraft’s captain, Indian national Captain Smit Machchhar, was attacked and stabbed by his co-pilot, who was allegedly attempting to force the aircraft into a fatal dive.
Fox News+ 1Despite sustaining severe injuries and lying bleeding on the floor, Captain Machchhar realized the plane was rapidly losing altitude. In what he described as his “last push,” he fought through his wounds to reach and trigger the cockpit door unlock release. This allowed passengers and crew to rush inside, restrain the attacker, and regain control of the aircraft. Off-duty crew and passengers then helped guide the aircraft to a safe emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, saving all 174 people aboard.
The Hindu+ 1The captain recounted the ordeal directly to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a personal exchange from his hospital bed in Saudi Arabia, where he is recovering. Captain Machchhar described how he clung to his faith during the darkest moments and pushed himself to act because he knew failing to open that door meant everyone would perish. He emotionally admitted that while he had never previously thought of himself that way, he now felt genuinely proud of what he managed to achieve.
Fox News+ 2Prime Minister Modi praised Captain Machchhar’s extraordinary heroism, stating that his split-second bravery and presence of mind prevented a catastrophic, 9/11-style disaster and that the entire nation of India stands behind him wishing him a speedy recovery.
