The “bulletproof vest” remark came during a joint appearance by late-night hosts Seth Meyers and John Oliver on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, which was taping a week of special shows in Brooklyn, New York.
Irish StarDuring their sit-down, Oliver and Meyers discussed how frequently Jimmy Kimmel comes up when audience members ask them what it feels like to draw the ire of Donald Trump. Oliver joked:
Mediaite“And we always say as long as you’re on the air, we’re fine. We are fully supportive. We are fully behind you the way that we’re fully behind a bulletproof vest.”
MediaiteMeyers chimed in that Kimmel absorbs nearly all the heat, effectively shielding the rest of the comedy circuit.
MediaiteWhen Kimmel asked why they thought Trump fixates so heavily on him in particular, Meyers joked about their theory:
The “Cool Kid” Factor: Meyers argued that Trump would secretly love to be friends with Kimmel. He joked that Trump views himself and Oliver as “a couple of dorks” who wouldn’t earn Trump’s respect anyway, whereas Kimmel hosts backyard pizza parties and projects an everyday vibe Trump would actually want an invitation to.
MediaiteBroadcast Habits: Kimmel noted that Oliver is on HBO (which Trump probably doesn’t subscribe to) and Meyers airs too late at night, whereas Kimmel airs earlier on network TV (ABC) right during Trump’s peak television-watching hours.
