The group was staying in a short-term rental inside a two-story building located in the historic Plaka neighborhood, close to the Acropolis. The incident occurred on the day they were scheduled to return to the United States.

The explosion, which severely damaged surrounding structures and scattered debris across several streets, claimed two other lives: an elderly British national and his Greek wife living on the upper floor. Greek authorities suspect a natural gas leak triggered the blast, and safety investigations into the site and adjacent buildings remain ongoing.
