(Bryce Underwood) The story behind this trend in Social Media today
03-10-2026
Bryce Underwood is Michigan’s sophomore quarterback and a former five-star recruit from the Detroit area. He originally committed to LSU, then flipped to Michigan late in the 2024–25 recruiting cycle on a large NIL package widely reported in the multi-million-dollar range. That deal, his ranking as the top quarterback prospect in his class, and the expectations that came with it have followed him ever since.Through early October 2026 his results have been uneven. Michigan opened the season under new head coach Kyle Whittingham with a mix of close wins and an offensive style that has often looked limited. Underwood entered the Minnesota game with modest season totals (roughly 780 passing yards, five touchdowns, and a completion rate in the low 60s) and a team that had already dropped a tight game to Iowa the week before. On October 3, Minnesota beat Michigan 20–14 at home and reclaimed the Little Brown Jug for the first time since 2014 (and its first home win over Michigan since 1977). Underwood finished 10 of 21 for 101 yards, no touchdowns, and two interceptions, with only 20 yards rushing. The interceptions came on back-to-back second-half drives and helped Minnesota take the lead; a late fourth-and-5 throw sailed well out of bounds. Michigan managed very little offense after halftime and fell to 3–2 overall and 0–2 in the Big Ten.The social-media reaction that followed is the current trend. Fans and commentators have posted clips of the interceptions and the late miss, called the performance a bust relative to the recruiting hype and NIL money, and urged Whittingham to bench him in favor of backup Tommy Carr. Some posts frame the loss as an example of high NIL spending failing to produce results. Whittingham has previously said the starting job is not guaranteed after earlier uneven games, which has added fuel to the benching talk heading into Michigan’s bye week.
