A Co-op convenience store located at The Oval in Brookfield, Middlesbrough, faced a premises licence review by the Middlesbrough Council licensing sub-committee following numerous complaints from nearby residents.
Teesside LiveResidents reported recurring issues with delivery drivers, particularly delivery couriers collecting online orders and general store delivery operations. Key complaints included:
Anti-social behavior, specifically delivery drivers urinating in nearby alleyways.
Persistent noise disturbance from delivery vehicles, slamming doors, and idling engines early in the morning and late into the evening.
During the council hearing, representatives for Co-op addressed the allegations, explaining that they had investigated the complaints and that the specific driver caught urinating had “paid the price” and was dismissed or barred from services. To appease the community and resolve concerns raised by residents and environmental health officers, Co-op agreed to several conditions. These included restricting and reducing the permitted hours for alcohol sales and delivery collections, strictly regulating delivery vehicle procedures, and ensuring access to store restroom facilities for drivers so such incidents would not occur again.
Teesside LiveFollowing these concessions and commitments, the licensing committee permitted the store to retain its premises licence to sell alcohol.
