Girl, 7, identified in fatal stabbing on South Side; woman in custody, tell me about this news today

Authorities in Chicago identified the 7-year-old victim as Edi Marie Hernandez Chacon following a fatal stabbing on the city’s South Side.

The incident occurred just before noon on Saturday in Chicago’s Chatham neighborhood, along the 8600 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue. According to the Chicago Police Department, the young girl was walking on the sidewalk when an adult woman approached her, produced a sharp object, and stabbed her multiple times in the back.

The child was rushed to Comer Children’s Hospital in critical condition, where she was pronounced dead.

Bystanders in the area intervened immediately and detained the female suspect until officers arrived. The suspect sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the encounter, was taken to an area hospital for medical evaluation, and was placed into police custody.
