Fugitive suspect in Georgia mom’s silicone injection murder captured 17 years later after DMV slipup: cops, tell me about this news today

A fugitive wanted in connection with the 2007 death of a Georgia mother following an illegal cosmetic silicone injection procedure was finally captured after roughly 17 years on the run, brought down by an unexpected routine error at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Here are the key details of the case:

• The Incident (2007): In March 2007, 34-year-old mother Shatarka Nuby was subjected to black-market silicone buttocks-enhancement injections inside an Atlanta-area hotel room. Investigators found that industrial-grade, non-medical silicone had been injected, which migrated into Nuby’s bloodstream. She developed massive silicone embolisms in her lungs and died as a result.

• The Investigation & Fugitive Hunt: Two individuals were tied to the illicit injections. One co-defendant was convicted in 2008 and served time in federal prison. The second primary suspect fled the jurisdiction shortly after Nuby’s death, sparking an interstate fugitive hunt led by local Georgia authorities and federal task forces that went cold for over a decade and a half.

• The DMV Slipup: The suspect had been living under an assumed alias to avoid law enforcement detection. The break in the case came when the suspect visited a local DMV office to obtain or renew an identity card/driver’s license. When DMV staff captured facial photos and processed the biometric data through modern facial recognition cross-referencing systems, the system flagged a direct match to the outstanding felony murder/manslaughter warrant from Georgia.

• The Arrest: Alerted by the identification match, law enforcement officers located and apprehended the suspect without incident. The suspect was booked into local custody pending extradition back to Georgia to formally face charges including reckless conduct, involuntary manslaughter/felony murder, and the unlicensed practice of medicine.
