Caleb Flynn, a 40-year-old former Ohio worship pastor and past American Idol contestant, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the February fatal shooting of his 37-year-old wife, Ashley Flynn.
CBCThe sentencing hearing in Miami County, Ohio, drew widespread attention following heartbreaking victim impact statements delivered on behalf of the couple’s two young daughters, Ava and Alyssa:
The daughters’ statements: A family member read aloud letters written by the girls. In her message, Ava remembered her mother as “the absolute perfect person” and confronted her father directly, asking: “What did she ever do to you to make you hate her so much?” Her sister, Alyssa, stated plainly in her letter that she would never visit him in prison. Flynn broke down in tears at the defense table as the statements were read.
The case and motive: Prosecutors presented evidence that Flynn shot Ashley twice in the head while she slept in their Tipp City home and then attempted to stage the scene as a home burglary gone wrong. The couple’s daughters were inside the house when police arrived. Investigators uncovered a year-long affair between Flynn and a former church intern, Alleigha Botner. Text messages showed Flynn plotting how to murder his wife, culminating in a text sent the night before the killing stating: “I choose you. I’m free. Actions will come tomorrow”.
AP News+ 1The sentencing: Judge Jeannine Pratt condemned Flynn’s conduct as marked by “deceit, manipulation and cruelty,” handing down the maximum term of life without parole. Though Flynn apologized to his family for being unfaithful and breaking his marriage vows, he continued to maintain his innocence before the court, insisting he did not pull the trigger.
