Nidal Hasan is trending because the Pentagon announced that President Donald Trump approved an execution order for him by military firing squad.

Hasan, a former U.S. Army major and psychiatrist, was convicted and sentenced to death by a military jury in 2013 for the November 2009 mass shooting at Fort Hood (now Fort Cavazos), Texas, which killed 13 people and wounded more than 30 others.

The decision is drawing significant attention because military death sentences require presidential approval to proceed, and if carried out, it would mark the first U.S. military execution since 1961. The Secretary of the Army has been tasked with setting the time and location for the execution.
