Equatorial Guinea: Information, Geography, Economy, and Key Facts
Equatorial Guinea, officially the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, is a Central African nation located on the Gulf of Guinea. Bordered by Cameroon to the north and Gabon to the south and east, it is notable for being the only sovereign African nation where Spanish is an official language.
Geographic Overview and Regions
Equatorial Guinea covers an area of approximately 28,051 square kilometers (10,831 square miles) and consists of two primary regions:
Insular Region: Includes Bioko Island in the Gulf of Guinea (housing the historic capital city, Malabo) and the volcanic island of Annobón located south of São Tomé and Príncipe.
Continental Region (Río Muni): The mainland territory between Cameroon and Gabon, featuring the country’s largest economic hub, Bata, as well as the planned administrative capital, Ciudad de la Paz (formerly Oyala).
Key Facts and Demographics
Capital: Malabo (Bioko Island); administrative center transitioning to Ciudad de la Paz on the mainland.
Official Languages: Spanish, French, and Portuguese. Indigenous languages such as Fang, Bubi, and Annobonese Creole are widely spoken across regions.
Currency: Central African CFA franc (XAF).
Population: Approximately 1.7 million.
Climate: Tropical equatorial climate characterized by high humidity, lush rainforest ecosystems, and warm temperatures year-round.
Economic Landscape and Natural Resources
The economic profile of Equatorial Guinea shifted dramatically during the late 1990s following the discovery of substantial offshore crude oil and natural gas reserves. Hydrocarbons form the vast majority of the nation’s export earnings and government revenue. Beyond petroleum, the economy relies on timber extraction, maritime fishing, and subsistence agriculture (chiefly cassava, plantains, and cocoa). Development priorities center on economic diversification, infrastructural modernization, and energy transition projects.
